How often do you get lot of groceries thinking you could cook delicious home cooked healthy meal ? And by the time you sort the grocery and arrange it in the fridge you get hungry and order pizza :) ? Many times we end up throwing the unused and nearly rotten vegetables.

One tip I can share is to eat stomach full before you go grocery shopping :) , In my experience when I am hungry I buy more than necessary grocery and buy lot of unwanted processed junk food too!

To ease the pain and guilt of throwing away the rotten grocery , lets see what you could do instead . All the vegetables that are rotten can be put in a container along with other everyday scraps left after cutting vegetables, orange peels , banana peels etc. Keep this container outdoors and it will turn into compost.Compost is also known as black gold which helps healthy growth for plants and trees. It is the best organic fertilizer you could ever get! There are many helpful videos on YouTube that teach making compost.

Now coming back to what this post is about..

Yes, the rotten onions!

When you see slight sprout and little rot on the onion, just dig a hole (about the size of the onion) in your backyard or use a pot and plant this onion in it. The onion will start to grow and will yield onion seeds. Onion seeds can be used to grow onions . But if you are impatient like me you could harvest when they grow up to be spring onions a.k.a scallops.

Many recipes, specially Indian recipes call for onion seeds (known as kalongi in hindi) ,you can use your own home grown seeds for those recipes.

I let this one sit a little too much. You can plant it as soon as you see little rot or a sprout.

The buds on top will bloom into beautiful flowers and make seeds.
